The Canto Ostinato by Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012) has grown into a classical success. He composed it in a time where experimental atonal music was leading. When composing the Canto he made a big turn back to tonal music on his favorite instrument, the piano. The piece is considered minimal due to the repetitive nature of it. It is gradually shifting to different sections using patterns. When you think you know where it’s going it changes and takes a different turn, breaking the rhythm or following a new path. It creates a certain tension you can feel throughout the piece. The patterns and repetition give the effect of a trancelike state which can evoke a very powerful reaction. Originally the piece was composed for multiple piano’s Ivo Janssen wrote an adaptation for one piano which was approved by the composer himself.
Pianist Ivo Janssen (1963) studied with Jan Wijn at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. Between 1986 and 1990 he won a number of prizes, including the Jacques Vonk Price, which enabled him to continue his studies abroad with, among others, Robert Levin. Since his debut in the Concertgebouw in 1988, Ivo Janssen has regularly performed in The Netherlands, as well as Germany, France, Italy, Australia and the US. Among many others he played together with Heinrich Schiff, Janine Jansen, Han de Vries and Charlotte Margiono. Fanfare wrote about his performance of the Canto Ostinato “His digital dexterity on this disc is nothing short of phenomenal, as is his stamina. In addition, I take the composer’s expressions as indicating that Janssen contributes much to these works. However the credit should be apportioned, the result is music that is fascinating and totally convincing.”
Give audiovisual explorer Boris Acket (1988) a room, terrain, or space to play in and he’ll envelop it into something otherworldly. Acket translates conceptual notions into immersive, multi-sensory experiences: technology, space, light, and sound all form a prism in which specific themes or subjects are explored and rematerialized. Instead of relying on just a single discipline to satiate his own curiosity, he acts as a conductor for multiple forms: installation art, technology, live performance, sound, film and installations all of them working together to reveal a bigger picture: An endless research project into the experience of time, space, natural elements and music. His works & performances have been presented amongst others at NXT Museum, Lowlands, De School, Down The Rabbit Hole, Wildeburg, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Van Gogh Museum, Frame Lab & DGTL Festival.
You can find the Zuiderkerk tucked away between the houses just behind the Nieuwmarkt. The church is standing on a small square with a somewhat Mediterranean feeling to it. Its bell tower is well known and a familiar sight of the cityscapes of Amsterdam. The church was built between 1603 and 1611. Great artists are connected to it, such as: Ferdinand Bol, Monet and Rembrandt who lived just around the corner. Nowadays you can visit the church and listen to magical concerts or experience a special event.
