Calliope Tsoupaki - Thin Air; Free download for orchestras!

Thin Air by Calliope Tsoupaki is an ode to compassion and solidarity in these difficult (corona) times. The Composer Laureate wrote this special piece for every instrument and every voice. However, an orchestral version has never been performed before. The Residentie Orkest, conducted by chief conductor Nicholas Collon, had the honor of playing the world premiere on Sunday 25 April. This also fits with the reputation of the Hague orchestra as a performer of newly composed music.

Calliope Tsoupaki was installed on November 25 2018 as Composer Laureate (Componist des Vaderlands), the leading figure of new Dutch music. As a composer, she is at the heart of society and wants to win the hearts of many for the music of today. Tsoupaki sees it as her most important task to make the craft of a composer more visible to a wide audience. That is why she allows the public to follow through social media and the Composer Laureate website as she composes a new piece. Tsoupaki: “Composers don’t work in isolation in a back room. We are flesh and blood people. We have a craft that has been around for centuries and will continue to exist.”

Tsoupaki composed Thin Air for Festivals for Compassion, an initiative of the Wonderfeel festival. Since its inception, it has been performed internationally more than 50 times. The piece travels from festival to festival – including Edinburgh International Festival, Helsinki Festival, Istanbul Music Festival, Klarafestival and Holland Festival – like a true compassion relay.

Following the Residentie Orkest, other orchestras are encouraged to perform Thin Air. The orchestral version is available for free at Donemus.
