Bram Kortekaas: Divertimento for orchestra

Bram Kortekaas was commissioned by Phion to write a new orchestral work that will have its world premiere here.

Rarely heard notes from a famous composer continue the program. Because, unlike his well-known Violin Concerto, Bruch’s Concerto for viola and clarinet is almost never on the music stands. Unjustified, as the two musicians who play the solo parts prove. Miguel da Silva is a member of the famous Ysaÿe quartet and Olivier Patey has been a solo clarinetist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for many years.

The second half of the classical concerto is filled with Mozart’s beloved notes. As an active member of the Vienna Freemason Lodge, he wrote the Trauermusik in memory of a beloved fellow member. A beautiful instrumental lament with the beautiful dark color of three basset horns. Symphony No. 40 is undoubtedly His competitor Salieri thought it was impressive enough to conduct its Viennese premiere. And Brahms, who owned the original manuscript, cherished it as his most precious possession. But what do you want with such beautiful classical music that still moves every listener?

The combination makes it special and complete: a classical concert where Mozart, viola, clarinet and a world premiere come together. It almost sounds too good to be true, but Phion proves that it is possible with concerts in Deventer, Arnhem, Zwolle, Doetinchem, Enschede and Nijmegen.

Programme

Bram Kortekaas Commissioned work (world premiere)

Bruch Double Concerto for clarinet and viola opus 88

Program note Divertimento for orchestra

The 2024-2025 season marks the fifth season of Phion Orchestra. Bram Kortekaas celebrates this milestone in his composition Divertimento for orchestra.

A divertimento was historically often written for social occasions. It has later become a title that is used for concert music as well. In both cases, a divertimento is generally a light-hearted composition.

In line with the festive occasion for which it is written, Divertimento for orchestra paints a picture of a party. With playful, energetic music on an often grinding harmonic basis, it first shows the expectant mood during somewhat chaotic party preparations. A captivating interplay of bubbles in a glass of sparkling wine is described by a section of mysterious harmonic and instrumentational colours. After this resting point in the music, the focus shifts to the now bustling festivities with a dance like, fast finale.

The Netherlands’ most famous composition? More frequently heard than the national anthem? It very well could be. The mesmerizing *Canto Ostinato* by Simeon ten Holt appears on music stands with astonishing frequency. Perhaps it helps that it can be performed on a variety of instruments.
