Calliope Tsoupaki: Scorpio (by Sasha Witteveen)
Scorpio for contrabass solo by Calliope Tsoupaki special written for a young Dutch musician Sasha Witteveen is on tour of Dutch Classical Talent.
Sasha Witteveen takes the listener from the darkness to the light. As a theme or structure for her concert, she quotes Martin Luther King: ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.’ This can be achieved, for example, by a dramatic transition from minor to major. She lets her double bass speak about loss and consolation, captivity and freedom, injustice and honesty, sarcasm and humour, drama and love. At 19 years old, she is the youngest finalist ever. The jury: ‘Her decisiveness and determination are impressive, she knows exactly what she wants. Without fear, her fingers race over the strings, taming her instrument.”
