Joey Roukens: Distorted Fantasia (after J.P.Sweelinck)
When Bryce Dessner’s latest Piano Concerto is performed by star pianist Alice Sara Ott, something special is about to happen. Dessner, an American composer from Paris, has won Grammy Awards for his ‘classical’ compositions and as a guitarist with his rock band The National. Philzuid co-commissioned this Piano Concerto, written especially for Alice Sara Ott (‘dazzling, unstoppable’, The Guardian). In addition to this unique Dutch premiere, you can enjoy Joey Roukens’ enchanting tribute to centuries-old Renaissance music by Sweelinck, and the romantic, symphonic wealth of color from Ottorino Respighi’s Italy. In his Fontane di Roma and Feste Romane, this Italian master composer painted in an inimitable way the splashing fountains, dark scenes in Nero’s Circus Maximus and sun-drenched harvest festivals of ancient Rome.
