Maxim Shalygin: ‘Drop after drop’ for saxophone quartet
Chameleonic and passionate is perhaps the best way to describe the four saxophonists who make up the Amstel Quartet. When you hear them play, all boundaries between different musical genres fall away. Technical limitations do not exist and musical boundaries exist only to be crossed. For this reason, the Dutch music press has described the Amstel Quartet as the most colorful saxophone quartet in the world. The quartet often received accolades. For example, they received the Concert Artists Guild Management Award, the Kersjes Prize and the Gaudeamus International Interpreters Award. They performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie in Luxembourg and Carnegie Hall New York.
For their own label Amstel Records they recorded 10 CDs to date with versatile repertoire from music composed especially for them to minimal music and Indian tablas.Their latest album of French chansons “Sax with Elan” was described in the press as “Saxy chansons brimming with joi de vivre.”
