Maxim Shalygin: Prelude No.1, No.4
Located not far from the ancient capitals Kyoto and Nara, the Kumano region is known for its lush nature, its sacred sites and the pilgrimage routes that have crossed it since medieval times. It is this region from which she comes that pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama celebrates in “KUMANO”. This project that she created with Dutch cinematographer Reinier van Brummelen takes the form of a large installation. Images filmed in Kumano, classical and contemporary works performed on the piano, sounds of nature, electronic sounds… From her childhood memories, Tomoko Mukaiyama takes us to a land where sacred and impure, beauty and ugliness, reality and imaginary.
