Maxim Shalygin: Songs of Holy Fools
A singer accompanies herself on the piano. In this situation of absolute vulnerability, she interprets songs about isolation and uncertainty by composers from Ukraine, Germany, China and Poland. Limbo is the name of this heart-to-heart program by Viktoriia Vitrenko. It is dedicated to her colleague and friend Maryja Kalesnikawa, a Belarusian opposition activist.
Vitrenko and Kalesnikawa initiated cultural projects together in Stuttgart until the latter returned to her homeland in the wake of the protests against the Lukashenka regime, where she was sentenced to eleven years in prison in September 2021 for her activism. Last year, Kalesnikawa was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Graz University of Art in absentia at the ORF music protocol. Limbo is a concert that shows how deeply war is embedded in the political, social and cultural levels of a society.
With music from five song cycles by Ying Wang, Sven-Ingo Koch, Alla Zagaykevych, Maxim Shalygin and Agata Zubel.
