Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Simeonkwartet)
Listen to the idiosyncratic masterpiece “Canto Ostinato” by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. It is an absolutely hypnotic experience to hear this work live, especially in the beautiful Great Hall of the Beurs van Berlage.
Canto Ostinato has been performed in countless performances, the Simeon Quartet plays this masterpiece in its original version for four grand pianos. The music is accompanied by a beautiful lighting design. If you want, you can also listen to the music lying down.
In an interview in de Volkskrant, Jan Eilander asked the composer whether his music could be called romantic. Ten Holt replied, “Mmmmm. Melancholic, nostalgic music. (…) It is the nostalgia of being a foreigner. Nostalgia for a utopia perhaps. To the land of the beloved. To the world where people are not predators for each other.”
