Simeon ten Holt: Meandres
The Natalon Quartet (formerly Rondane Quartet) will play two works by the Bergen composer Simeon ten Holt in De Duif. Pianist Robert Lambermont had a close relationship with the composer, who wrote about this in his memoirs: “Robert understood better than anyone that the performance of the full-length pieces (after Canto Ostinato) cannot simply be arranged with a few rehearsals or by skilled pianists, but requires a period of maturation that amounts to a laborious process of conquest.”
The pianists of the Natalon Quartet, praised for their interpretations of Ten Holt’s five full-length compositions for four keyboard instruments, have been playing together for over eighteen years. This translates into unparalleled and crystal-clear interplay. Four grand pianos, one sound.
Meandres
This is Ten Holt’s last major composition. He compared the composition to a four-track tape with which he had worked extensively in the seventies. Each pianist takes on one track in principle, but may also switch tracks if desired. There is a repeat structure as we know it from Canto Ostinato, but the parts are more clearly divided into four layers.
