Jeroen D’hoe: Songs for the Crossing
The program includes a new chamber music version of the song cycle “Songs for the Crossing” that Jeroen D’hoe (°1968) composed on poems by author Stefan Hertmans (°1951) for soprano, choir and orchestra, commissioned by Flagey (2017). Inspired by the unique setting of the Drongenhofkapel, the composer has specially created a new sober, intimate version for soprano, piano and string quintet.’Songs for the Crossing’ is both a current commemoration of the First World War and a reflection on the struggle that still marks many people’s lives every day, on the run from war conflict and violence, two themes that form Hertmans’ novels “War and Turpentine” and “De Bekeerlinge” features, which were the inspiration for the poems set in this song cycle.
