Joey Roukens: Vertekende Fantasie (after J.P. Sweelinck)
Ryan Bancroft, winner of the 2018 Malko Conductor Competition, leads the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in a program with two divergent themes: dance and early music. Adams’s Chairman Dances comes from his opera Nixon in China, in which party leader Mao and his wife dance a foxtrot. And if anyone knows what dancing is, it is Stravinsky who turned the entire dance world upside down a hundred years ago with his revolutionary ballets, such as Petrushka.
The same Stravinsky liked to be carried away by the music of the old masters. The Belgian violinist Marc Bouchkov, who made his wonderful debut with the orchestra last year and is artist-in-residence this year, will play Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto. In this the composer is guided by Bach’s ingenious composition techniques. Sweelinck is Roukens’s source of inspiration. In his Distorted fantasy he subtly adapts one of the most beautiful keyboard works of the 17th-century Amsterdammer to his own hand.
