Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Thilo Muster/organ & Alexandra Weidlich/piano)
The Reformed Church Community of Arlesheim invites you to the performance of Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt on the Long Night of the Churches, played on organ and grand piano. In addition, texts by medieval mystics are heard.
Simeon ten Holt’s (1923 – 2012) «Canto Ostinato», completed in 1979, is a work of variable length and structure for one or more keyboard instruments, ascribed to the style of «minimal music», written in late Romantic harmony. Our organists Alexandra Weidlich and Thilo Muster will play the organ and the grand piano sometimes simultaneously, sometimes alternately. In between, Pastor Marc-Andrin Eggenschwiler will read short texts by medieval mystics. In addition to the texts by Marguerite Porete, who worked in the late Middle Ages, the voices of Lady Julian of Norwich and Mechthild von Magdeburg will also be heard. All three have courageously made their visions and insights public – and in the case of Marguerite Porete paid for it with their lives.
