Michael Fine: Mouvement Solitaire
Composer Michael Fine about his new piece Mouvement Solitude:
“Barcelona based cellist Sveta Trushka contacted me about performing my Cello Sonata also asking if I had anything for Cello Solo that she could add to a series of upcoming concerts. I replied that I hadn’t but immediately sat down to write something for her. I listened to several of her very beautiful, dramatic and thoughtful performances of various repertoire on YouTube to get a sense of how our sensibilities might meet on a piece of music paper. I rather quickly sketched and sent her this “Mouvement Solitude.” She liked it, had a few questions and sent me a couple of videos of her first readings. She found the shape of piece quickly and programmed the piece for its premiere in Barcelona, 13 May 2023. As Sveta worked on the piece, she came up with a fascinating narrative about the piece – a father and his young daughter out for ice cream! The mother makes a brief appearance with a miniature waltz and then disappears. Sveta speculated that the couple is separated, a modern family. I was happy she found a tale to tell for this brief but hopefully captivating musical moment.”
Further on the program pieces by Rossini, Weinberg, Offenbach and Cases.
