Yannis Kyriakides: Chaoids

Ensemble Klang present three works by established composers from the world of Dutch new music. The works combine saxophones, trombone, percussion, electric guitar and piano with electronics. Kyriakides’ Chaoids explores rhythmic polyphony, a slow moving counterpoint of three voices are set against a constant electronic pulse. Isadora’s Cornish Pasty assembles, mixes and encrusts disparate pieces of musical material. While the motion and stillness of Adriaansz’s Waves 5-7, one of Ensemble Klang’s most frequently-performed works, is described by the musicologist Bob Gilmore as ‘abstract music of a high order, reanimating the mediaeval idea of music as applied number: but the questions it asks are defiantly of the twenty-first century, questions about musical perception, about the nature of sound and the passage of time.’
