Calliope Tsoupaki: a musical portrait

In spite of progressive developments in the music industry, a gender-specific imbalance remains perceptible. Concert halls and organizers often tend to prefer works by deceased male composers, while the music of contemporary female composers is often neglected. In order to counter this disproportion, the final project within the framework of the Women’s Promotion Scholarship dedicates the music of the outstanding Greek composer Calliope Tsoupaki (*1963). The scholarship student Nura Natour will perform an extract from Tsoupaki’s Oeuvre on stage together with students of the Freiburg College of Music. In an interview aired earlier, the two spoke about Tsoupaki’s experience as a composer and lecturer. The importance of role models or the challenges of marketing and reception of contemporary music were discussed in relation to the gender debate. The interview will be integrated into the event in writing.
