Celebrating 85 Years of Music: Jan Vriend’s Milestone Concert

In a musical journey that spans over eight decades, Jan Vriend, the renowned Dutch composer and pianist, is set to celebrate his 85th birthday in a spectacular event at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. Born in 1938 in Benningbroek, the Netherlands, Vriend’s musical odyssey began at the age of five, guided by his father’s expertise in piano, clarinet, violin, and organ.

Vriend’s prolific career has seen him delve into composition studies, winning prestigious awards like the Prize for Composition in 1967. His thirst for knowledge led him to Paris, where he studied under Xenakis and the Groupe de Recherches Musicales, expanding his musical horizons.

The celebration on Saturday afternoon, November 11, promises an extraordinary musical experience. The program features four works, including three premieres, showcasing the depth of Vriend’s creative genius. The lineup includes performances by the piano duo Ralph van Raat and Maarten van Veen, cellist Joy Lisney, and the DoelenEnsemble with singer Charlotte Riedijk, conducted by Maarten van Veen.

Adding to the celebration, a new double album of chamber and orchestral compositions by Jan Vriend will be unveiled, marking a significant contribution to contemporary repertoire. Attacca, the esteemed label, was founded in 1981 and made this new album possible. Since October 1, Donemus is responsible for digitally distributing the entire catalogue.
