Giel Vleggaar: The ingenious Gentleman, based on Don Quixote op. 35 by Richard Strauss
In the symphonic poem Don Quixote by Richard Strauss, the cello portrays the main character and the viola portrays his servant. For this occasion, the musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra will play a special arrangement for chamber ensemble, written by Giel Vleggaar. Actor Kenneth Herdigein reads passages from Cervantes’ famous novel.
Michael Gieler, artistic director IJ-Salon: ‘This program fulfills a long-cherished wish. The music is delicious and contains some of the most beautiful notes ever written for cello. This was certainly spent on Joris van den Berg, one of the fantastic cellists from the Concertgebouw Orchestra. As a violist, I am of course also looking forward to playing the role of Sancho Panza.’
