Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Noords Nederlands Orkest)
The Dutch-Israeli Karmit Fadael has impressed in recent years with her mature, original music. Now she has written a new violin concerto for the adventurous violinist Pieter van Loenen and the North Netherlands Orchestra – a bit of a homecoming for Fadael, who grew up in Friesland. The orchestra combines Fadael’s work with music by the prominent Swedish composer Anders Hillborg and the now legendary Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt: it promises to be a compelling concert.
Karmit Fadael describes herself as ’emotional, stubborn, rational but also calm’, and says that you can hear those qualities in her music. An ethereal sound beauty is also striking in her orchestral works. Ten Holt composed his Canto Ostinato in the 1970s, after he had renounced avant-garde composition techniques. Since its premiere in 1979, the work has captured countless hearts and continues to elicit unusually emotional responses.
