Jacob ter Veldhuis: Tallahatchie Concerto

In a night of drama and superb musicianship, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) leading classical soloists join the WAAPA Symphony Orchestra to battle it out in the final of the prestigious 2024 Warana Concerto Competition, with each student performing their favourite concerto movement. Ace conductor Jessica Gethin also directs the opening movement of Amy Beach’s renowned and romantic Gaelic Symphony – the first symphony to be composed and published by a female American composer – and you’ll hear the winning work from the 2024 WAAPA Symphony Orchestra Composition Competition. WAAPA’s student performers are mentored by expert musicians from Perth Symphony Orchestra in this outstanding Side-by-Side performance.

JacobTV (Jacob ter Veldhuis, Westerlee, 1951) started his musical career as a rock musician. At the Conservatory of Groningen he studied composition with Willem Frederik Bon and electronic music with Luctor Ponse. When graduating in 1980, he was awarded the Prize for Composition. In the following years he attracted attention with two symphonies and works such as Insonnia, Drei Stille Lieder and Diverso il Tempo. Besides, he earned a living by writing film scores and music for the clown of Circus Krone. In 1984, he became a full-time composer and started a long search for a voice of his own.
