Maarten ter Horst: Trio in C mineur
“Letters from youth” is a musical journey with the theme of budding love and freedom. The Zenith Trio consists of Ileana Termini, soprano and alto saxophone, Mafalda Oliveira, tenor and baritone saxophone and Elizabeth Goh, grand piano. In this unique line-up with two saxophones and piano, they take you through the combination of music and poetry, written by two members of the ensemble, Mafalda Oliveira and Elizabeth Goh.
Youth is a beautiful time in our lives when vitality, freedom and innocence lead people to the most unexpected and memorable adventures. During our youth we live intensely, we feel fearless and we dream without limits. At this time in their lives, two members of the Zenith Trio felt inspired to write poetry about love and life. In Letters from youth, Zenith explores this period of human life through their own story, music arranged by and for them, and newly composed works in collaboration with two composers who make the freedom and daring of youth palpable in their compositions.
The program starts with an arrangement of the early and romantic Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor by Dmitri Shostakovich. This will be followed by the diary-like work Ciudades by the Dutch composer Guillermo Lago – originally written for saxophone quartet and adapted for this instrumentation by the composer himself – and two new commissioned works, to the young Dutch composer Maarten ter Horst and the young Portuguese composer Daniel Ferreira. Performed for the first time tonight at the Pianola Museum!
