Luc Brewaeys: Symphony N3 / Violacelli / Cardhu
Martijn Dendievel’s inaugural concert as chief conductor of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra.
Tchaikovsky’s “Winter Dreams” and Brewaeys’s “Third Symphony” on the same bill? That’s a thrilling mix of humor, enchanting timbres, and unbridled joy.
Just like the young Dendievel and the young Tchaikovsky, who searches for his own voice in this “First Symphony,” Luc Brewaeys’s music bursts with energy. The composer preferred to let as much as possible be heard simultaneously. And what instrument lends itself better to this than the orchestra? Not only did he devise the most original timbres, he also smuggled in atypical instruments—or how about the kazoo? In the second movement of his Third Symphony, a remarkably colorful sonorous landscape delights the ear. Until the orchestra erupts in a resounding climax: the typical Brewaeys signature.
