Phaedra in Flames is a modern version of the classic love drama, written by Nino Haratischwili, author of The Eighth Life for Brilka, among others. With Malou Gorter as Queen Phaedra, Yela de Koning as her forbidden love Persea, and live music by the New European Ensemble. Would you dare to seize your freedom when the world holds you captive?
Phaedra, Queen of Athens, lives trapped in an unhappy marriage with her husband, Theseus. Everything changes when she meets her future daughter-in-law, Persea. This young woman shakes up everything and everyone around her, recklessly kicking against the existing power structures. Persea’s fierce power enchants Phaedra. A secret, passionate relationship develops, with disastrous consequences.
Director Ola Mafaalani made a name for herself with raw, vivid, and poetic productions such as Othello, Wings of Desire, and Fellini. Until 2016, she was the artistic director of the Noord Nederlands Toneel theater company. After that, she mainly staged large-scale productions at the opera and abroad (including Berlin and Riga). For the first time since the theater hit Borgen (2016), she is now back in the main theater. Composer Krists Auznieks wrote new music, which is performed live by four musicians from the New European Ensemble.
“For me, Phaedra in Flames is about the unstoppable power of love, which, like weeds, keeps blooming among the rubble. Nino Haratischwili shows how we all—women and men—live in a world based on outdated structures. The old has not yet passed away, preventing the new from being born. Phaedra and Persea attempt to force this renewal, but conservative forces do not give them a chance. Their attempt is a necessity, especially now. If we do not fight for loving relationships, there will be none!”
