Vasil Tole: Hoax
The piece for solo cello entitled HOAX was composed in 1999 and is one of Vasil S. Tole’s most frequently performed works. Its formal structure is divided into two parts: the first is meditative, while the second is fast-paced. The musical motif is based on three to four notes, which gradually expand in range and dynamics over time.
At its core, the work contrasts two fundamental states—such as day and night, earth and water, heat and cold—which, though seemingly opposite, represent normal conditions of existence.
The piece is dedicated to cellist Pjeter Guralumi, who will perform it at the concert accompanying the scientific conference “Albanian Music as Creation, Performance, Musicology, and Artistic Education,” organized by the Academy of Sciences of Albania and the University of Arts in Tirana.
