Aftab Darvishi about ‘Dance with Me Under the Falling Ruins’

Dance with Me Under the Falling Ruins is a celebration of hope and resilience.
The piece is composed for a unique ensemble: piano quintet, oboe, and Theremin.
It begins with a tender conversation between the Theremin and oboe, like two voices trying to find comfort in each other. Soon, the piano and strings join in, creating a harmonic texture to the rest.

The music moves through many emotions—moments of sadness and loss, but also flashes of joy, celebration, and brightness. To me, this reflects the cycle of life—its beauty and fragility. Regardless of the circumstances, we keep on dancing along. We dance—sometimes full of energy, and sometimes slowly, with thoughtfulness, even when we are surrounded by the falling ruins. Throughout the piece, the instruments sing together, exchange roles, and at times fall silent. But they always return to each other, creating a sense of togetherness that carries the music forward.
