Heleen Van Haegenborgh startÂed her career as a pianist, speÂcialised in conÂtemÂpoÂrary music and extendÂed techÂniques. Over the last years, she’s very active as a comÂposÂer with comÂmisÂsions in the fields of conÂtemÂpoÂrary music, old music, theÂater, visuÂal arts and jazz.
In a review of her latÂest release (Squaring the Circle, 2023) and referÂring to her record for foghorns and piano (2013), she was described by Clive Bell in The Wire as a comÂposÂer whose capacÂiÂty for intrigue persists.
In Belgium, she worked closeÂly togethÂer and made sevÂerÂal records with visuÂal artists and musiÂcians with othÂer backÂgrounds: jazz, elecÂtronÂics, Japanese music, free jazz,…She is seen as a musiÂcian who conÂnects the cirÂcuits of conÂtemÂpoÂrary clasÂsiÂcal music, free impro and experÂiÂmenÂtal underground.
As a comÂposÂer, she comÂposed for very difÂferÂent instruÂmenÂtaÂtions: Van Haegenborgh wrote pieces for sevÂerÂal speÂcifÂic quarÂtets: 4 elecÂtric guiÂtars (Zwerm Electric Guitar Quartet), a quarÂtet of periÂod instruÂments (Nordic Affect), a quarÂtet of perÂcusÂsionÂists and elecÂtronÂics (Squaring the Circle). Further she wrote solo’s for melodÂic instruÂments of the 16th cenÂtuÂry and perÂcusÂsion (comÂpulÂsary pieces MA Competition), choir (Musarc), triÂo’s for lute voice and perÂcusÂsion, trio for oboe d’amore, piano and tenor, ensemÂble, trio for elecÂtric guiÂtar vioÂlin and piano, recorder and elecÂtronÂics, etc.
Apart from that, she perÂforms her own comÂpoÂsiÂtions for piano solo with elecÂtronÂics or in duo’s with Icelandic harpÂsiÂchordist Gudrun Oskarsdottir, Christian Mendoza (jazz piano), Esther Venrooy (elecÂtronÂics), Frederik Leroux (jazz guiÂtar) and impro with Tsubasa Hori (Taiko).
Improvisation projects have always been present in her career. She was part of the European Melting Pot in Wroclaw, Istanbul Express in Istanbul with Erdem Helvagioglu, Peking Express in China with Wu Fei, No Choice Toekomstmuziek, iniÂtiÂatÂed by visuÂal artist Dennis Tyfus and so on.
Now she’s workÂing on a new piece for Musarc, a celÂlo piece for Benjamin Glorieux and a large symÂphonie of city sounds in for De Singel and Toneelhuis with theÂatre direcÂtor Thomas Verstraeten.
Heleen Van Haegenborgh studÂied comÂpoÂsiÂtion at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Peter Swinnen, piano in Ghent with Daan Vandewalle and her music appeared on the folÂlowÂing labels: Entr’acte, El Negocito Records, De Werf Records, Logos and Het Balanseer.
