Wilbert Bulsink

Compositions

At a young age, his music was played by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. In 1999, his orchestral work Ontdekkingen (Discoveries) was selected for the Young Composers Project of the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra. Prelude no. 2 (2003) was performed during the World Music Days in Ljubljana. In 2006, together with Thomas Myrmel, he created the multimedia performance The Expected for 5 singers/speakers, 11-strong ensemble and electronics, based on a short film by Keren Cytter. In 2007, he composed Air (an eternal music) for the Nieuw Ensemble, with sho, duduk and qanun. In 2008 and 2009, his works were performed by the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. He also wrote some short piano works and short pieces for the Ziggurat ensemble and the Rosa Ensemble. In April 2009 his orchestral work Koranfragment was performed by the Orchestra of the Conservatory of Amsterdam conducted by Ed Spanjaard. At the request of November Music, he and Thomas Myrmel created the music theatre work Pigeonhouse in 2009, in close collaboration with the seven performing musicians.

Awards

In 1998 Wilbert Bulsink won first prize at the Prinses Christina Concours with Prelude nr. 1. In 1999 he received the NOG Stimulation Prize for Discoveries. In October 2005, he was awarded the first Jan van Vlijmen Prize for beginning composers. He received the Proms in Paradiso Programme Prize in 2006 for The Expected. In 2009, his composition Op/Weg..geblazen for air piano and ensemble was selected for Toonzetters and in 2010, his composition Koranfragment was selected for Toonzetters.

Education

He studied piano with Ton Hartsuiker and Gert-Jan Vermeulen, instrumentation with Theo Verbey and composition with Daan Manneke, Wim Henderickx and Theo Loevendie. In addition, he studied electronics with Kees Tazelaar, Jorrit Tamminga, and Jos Zwaanenburg. In 2008, he completed his composition studies with distinction. During his studies, Bulsink was active as a church organist and as a keyboardist/arranger in the rock band Magic Fish.
