As an extension of the projects carried out with the conservatory’s chamber music class (Jean-Renaud Lhotte), Ensemble Cairn has invited exiled Russian composer Dmitri Kourliandski to compose several pieces and take part in several ongoing projects (Julien Malaussena’s residency, Festival Ensembles 2024 in Bagnolet).
1°) Writing a piece lasting around 8mn for guitar, violin, viola and cello (or 3 instruments within this instrumentarium). This piece will be premiered at the Université d’Orléans on February 20, 2024, then performed on May 16, 2024 at the Salle de l’Institut (Orléans conservatory) and finally at the 5th edition of the Festival Ensemble(s) in Bagnolet in September 2024.
2) Writing of a short piece (to be confirmed in early October) for the DEM-level chamber music class at the Orléans conservatory. Three work sessions with students from the conservatory will be scheduled between March and May, to provide pedagogical support for this miniature.
3) Two readings by Dmitri Kourliandski: one at the Conservatoire, the other at the University (dates to be defined); presentation of the composer’s work.
4) an “Open lab for young musicians” workshop: 3×3 hours with a group of 7 young musicians during the Festival Ensemble(s) 2025 with the Bagnolet or Ivry conservatories, plus a feedback concert as part of the Festival Ensemble(s). The workshops will take place during the week of September 9, 2024.
Openlab offers an experience of interaction with the use of open form, graphic and sound scores, and improvisation. Such an experience is important for the development of musicians interested in the field of contemporary music performance. The first presentation of the laboratory took place in November 2022 at Luzern Hochschule, Switzerland, as part of the “Step across the border” project.
