Douglas Knehans: To The Stars (Sally Silvers)

‘Iconoclassical’ choreographer Sally Silvers presents the world premiere of You BetterHow does imagining world history’s first known author (Enheduanna, a woman from 2300 B.C. Mesopotamia) help challenge us to live-with — & dance-with — each other to “stay with the trouble”of our present? Choreographing a kaleidoscopic portrait of high priestess Enheduanna and the main goddess she served, You Better is another in a sequence of ‘girl crush’ dances that celebrate female power, writing, thinking, and moving. From ancient history fact or (science) fiction, a wild speculative fabulation of inventive movement tangles together patterns for ongoingness & reinvention out of the surprises of the present tense. This new evening-length dance continues Silvers’s decades of fascination with the poetic as well as the social meanings of movement. She offers a no-holds-barred exploration of movement possibilities often wittily tilted toward the eccentric, awkward, and unexpected.
