Aftab Darvishi: Map of Freedom
The Ashes Glow is the colorful and serious multicultural highlight of the Stift Festival. It’s colorful because big names and young talent from different cultures play together in unison during this concert and because there are no less than two world premieres and a Dutch premiere from different corners of the world. Jazz pianist and composer Rembrandt Frerichs wrote a new triple concerto in which the Iranian singer Mohammed Motamedi also has a leading role.
The Egyptian ud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros played ‘the roof off’ in London during the world premiere of Three Stages of Hindsight and the Dutch-Iranian Aftab Darvishi provides the serious notes with her Map of Freedom. Her magical ritual music sings about the freedom struggle of Iranian women. Just like Golijov’s Tenebrae, accessible and extremely penetrating. A concert that hurts as well as offers hope.
