Aftab Darvishi: To… Serenity
To… Serenity is a piece for clarinet in Bb, violin, cello, and piano.
In this work, I ask the clarinet player to make a sound “like sorna” in some parts. The sorna is an ancient Iranian woodwind instrument that has a piercing and trumpet-like sound. It is usually played at celebrations and is often accompanied by dance. This piece is inspired by the spiritual ceremonies (dances) in the south of Iran. There is a continuous sense of rhythmic drive which significantly underpins the piece. In moments, the sorna-like clarinet, as well as the other instruments, lend themselves to these animated dance structures, whilst in other places they have a contrasting role, pitted against this steady sense of rhythm.
