Alphons Diepenbrock: Im großen Schweigen
Nature as a Mirror of the Soul: Star baritone Christian Gerhaher interprets two rich, melancholic vocal scenes that illustrate this emotional interplay. First, he can be heard in “Der Einsame im Herbst” (The Lonely One in Autumn) from Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, followed by a magnificent discovery by Alphons Diepenbrock, a composer highly esteemed by Mahler. We will hear Diepenbrock’s orchestrally accompanied song Im großen Schweigen (In Great Silence), in which a person by the sea ponders the limits of language and thought. In his “Great” C major Symphony, Franz Schubert ignites the entire emotional spectrum of Romanticism, from exuberant joy to profound despair. Conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker in his debut is Markus Poschner.
