Bianca Bongers: Bis die Sonne aufgeht…

The lyrics of E.T.A. Hoffmann, who was not only a writer but also a composer, are full of musical images and visual stimuli. Encouragement for composers to create new works based on the dark and eerie story collection Night Pieces – which also includes the famous The Sandman.

Based on this music, visual artist Robin Beer creates projections in real time using small objects cut out of paper, gears or his hands. Projected onto the stage, the images create a play of light and shadow and interact with the space and musicians.

Hoffmann’s radical imagination sparks unexpected sounds and images. His fixation on sublime love and the mechanical parts of an automaton, visions of butterflies trapped in harpsichords and death sighs, and indelible obsession with the image of the human eye are omnipresent in the production.

When you think of Indonesia, the spicy scents of the oriental kitchen probably come to mind. But perhaps also wajang puppets, chirping monkeys swinging through the jungle, or a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Or the traditional dances in beautiful clothing.
