At the heart of tonight’s program is the highly anticipated U.S. premiere of Calliope Tsoupaki’s powerful work, Aurora for chorus and orchestra. This profound piece beautifully bridges deep emotional resonance with modern choral and orchestral textures. Inspired by the perilous journey refugees undertake across the Mediterranean in search of safety and a better future, Aurora serves as a poignant, deeply moving exploration of endurance, compassion, and the human spirit.

Framing this contemporary masterwork are two reflective selections by Ludwig van Beethoven that echo these themes of resilience. The evening opens gently with the Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, portraying the mythic hero who brings enlightenment to humanity. The concert then builds toward Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9. For this final piece, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra joins forces with the Charlotte Master Chorale and a stellar lineup of vocal soloists. Together, they unite in the universally uplifting “Ode to Joy” – a collective expression of hope and ultimate triumph over struggle.
