Calliope Tsoupaki: Narcissus
New Amsterdams Peil with “Narcissus: play for music + scent”; Narcissus is a music drama by composer Calliope Tsoupaki for 5 scent layers and 6 musicians. Music and scents trigger a deeply sensory experience.
Greek-Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki writes sensuous music that seduces and entices ears, eyes and even our noses. Melodic, spirited and full of mysticism. Tsoupaki wrote Narcissus, especially for Nieuw Amsterdams Peil. During the concert, five subtle scent layers are diffused, which the composer developed in close cooperation with scent expert Tanja Deurloo (Annindriya). With the set of sounds, scents and atmospheres, you penetrate deeply into the experience of Narcissus, the adolescent youth from Greek mythology, who falls in love with himself, dies and transforms into an intoxicatingly fragrant flower. Freud and Narcissus have another special connection, through the painter Dali, who painted the painting “the metamorphosis of Narcissus” for Freud.
