Calliope Tsoupaki: Perasma
The Dutch orchestral landscape is enriched with female conductors. Yes, that is still special and worth mentioning. Do they conduct differently than their male colleagues? Do they put different accents? Discover it for yourself with a new work by Calliope Tsoupaki, former Composer Laureate, a fiery violin concerto and a very personal symphony by Tchaikovsky.
Anja Bihlmaier is the second female chief conductor in the Netherlands, after Karina Canellakis (Radio Philharmonic Orchestra). This arouses curiosity about her vision of a violin concerto that is as popular as it is romantic and a symphony that is full of tough themes, ambiguous harmonies and melting melodies. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is known as his second ‘destiny symphony’, in which the composer surrenders ‘entirely’ to fate and the unfathomable whims of providence. That produces straight fireworks. But it is also a work of yearning melodies and a majestic conclusion, in which every thundercloud has been blown away behind the horizon.
