Chiel Meijering: Last Stand in the Fog
The International Saxophone Festival, initiated in 2003, is a unique event promoting classical music with the saxophone in the leading role. The festival’s program includes rich and diverse concerts ranging from the latest compositions to arrangements of works from past eras. Each year, artists from Poland and abroad participate, as well as chamber ensembles and saxophone orchestras.
During the Philharmonic concert, works by Maurice Ravel, Edvard Grieg, and Georges Bizet will be performed. Two world premieres will hold a special place in the program—compositions by Anna Maria Huszcza and Chiel Meijering, created to fully showcase the tonal qualities of the saxophone. The concert will feature soloists and ensembles representing various trends in the contemporary saxophone scene.
Performers will include American saxophonist Thomas Giles, an outstanding interpreter of contemporary repertoire who has performed over 250 premieres of new works, and Ladislav Fančovič, an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician regarded as a leading representative of European performing arts and one of the most versatile musicians in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Fančovič will play an original instrument—a baritone saxophone manufactured by Adolphe Sax—as well as a contrabass saxophone, which will be heard in Poland for the first time in history.
