Chiel Meijering: Opera Bluebeard

After the success of Zauberflöte/Requiem in 2018 and Divorce of Figaro in 2022, Holland Opera will perform again in co-production with DOX in the (late) summer of 2024 in the impressive Werkspoorkathedraal in Utrecht.

Bluebeard, based on the story Bluebeard, is the blood-curdling story of a wealthy, mysterious singer. When he unexpectedly has to go abroad, he hands his young bride the keys to his cathedral. She is allowed in any room, but Bluebeard forbids her liquid from entering his private room.

In this opera version we not only see the dark side of Bluebeard, but we also focus on his inner side. How many secrets can a person have, do you really have to always share everything with the person you love? What is the value of a diary if someone else reads it? But also: what drives him to give Judith the key to his forbidden room?

Chiel Meijering

Chiel has composed works for almost every conceivable instrumentation. Many of these pieces are performed regularly at home and abroad and were written for renowned chamber music ensembles, such as the Matangi string quartet and Sinfonietta Amsterdam. The great success of his opera ‘Alzheimer’, which premiered in January 2006, marked his breakthrough with a broader theatre audience. He previously composed Kwali Kuna and Styx for Holland Opera, among others.

From August 21 to September 7 in the Werkspoorkathedraal Utrecht.
