Christina Viola Oorebeek: Book of Samples
at Splendor in Amsterdam.
The inspiration for the series is a sample/swatch book – twenty samples/swatches per page from the BOOK of SAMPLES of the textile fabric house, Fortin, 1825. Each instrumental piece (1 & 3) is the source of the musical materials used in
the electronics of the music video, paired with visuals based on the images from the
BOOK of SAMPLES (2 & 4).
Each sample/swatch previews the complete textile design – a birdseye view, a seeing of the whole as through a looking glass. Made for presenting fabrics to prospective buyers, sample books are collages of swatches with pattern and color variations. Reading and re-drawing the designs for instruments/sound, I worked to transform wave patterns into sound objects. The swatch is a closeup of the larger field it is representing…pattern in the wave….wave within a stripe….wave parallel…..waves ascending…..
