Daan Manneke: Gedanken zu Bach

The legendary origin of Bach’s Goldberg Variations — composed for an insomniac count and his musician, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg — sets the stage for this midnight candlelight concert by pianist Hannes Minnaar.

While the cycle is famous for its stunning architecture and enchanting Aria, this performance features a unique contemporary addition. Halfway through, Minnaar interrupts the variations with Daan Manneke’s Gedanken zu Bach: Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig.

Composed during the pandemic and dedicated to Minnaar, Manneke’s intermezzo consists of six short movements. It draws inspiration from Michael Franck’s 1652 German hymn, creating a modern bridge within Bach’s masterpiece. This dialogue between old and new concludes with Bach’s final witty variations and the eventual return of the opening Aria.
