Daan Manneke: Grant-motet Pseaume CIII
On Sunday 17 September Herman Mussche will conduct a new work by the Dutch composer, conductor and organist Daan Manneke. Grand-motet Pseaume CIII will have its world premiere during a special church service in the Oude Kerk and will be sung by the Sweelinckcantorij. Matthias Havinga is organist. The service begins at 11 a.m. and is free to attend. Afterwards there is the possibility to talk with Daan Manneke.
In the Oudekerk municipality, ‘church renewal’ means that the sermon will be interpreted in a different way, this time with the premiere of Grand-motet Pseaume CIII by Daan Manneke. This Sunday’s Gospel reading is about how often to forgive one another, and Psalm 103 focuses on “forgiveness.” In his composition Daan Manneke uses the Genevan melody of Psalm 103 and the translation from the Naarden Bible. For this new composition he was also inspired by the music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621), who was organist of the Oude Kerk during his lifetime and one of the most important composers of his time.
The Dutch composer, conductor and organist Daan Manneke (1933) has a large and versatile oeuvre to his name with more than 250 works, consisting of chamber music, choral and organ compositions and works for large ensembles. Manneke does not strive for ‘consumer music’ for worship, but his work is religiously rooted and has its own sacredness. For Manneke, who has also been a choir conductor for many years, singing is the most primary form of composing. Almost his entire oeuvre originated from the voice, even the compositions that at first sight seem instrumental.
