Daan Manneke: Madrigals for the City of Breda

On Saturday, March 15 and Holy Saturday, April 19, Cappella Breda will perform a special passion concert entitled: ‘Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir’. This chorale cantata is one of the oldest and most popular chorales that Martin Luther published together with his musical companion Johann Walther in 1524 in the Geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn in Wittenberg.

‘Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir’ is a rhymed paraphrase of Psalm 130, which we also know in its Latin version as ‘De profundis clamavi’. The song was sung at Luther’s funeral. You will hear performances of this chorale by Johann Sebastian Bach and Lupus Hellinck.

Daan Manneke 85

The founder of our choir and our conductor until 2017 is celebrating his 85th birthday this year. That is why we perform his composition ‘Madrigals for the City of Breda’, which ends with the chorale ‘Aus tiefer Not’. The poems – which are inextricably linked to this composition – will be read by Yvonne Né. The composition was written on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city of Breda in 2002 and is an important example of Manneke’s style, in which historical and contemporary elements merge. Madrigals for the city of Breda consists of several parts, with each part highlighting a different aspect of the city or its history. The choir will be accompanied by accordionist Bernou de Heer.

1. Aus tiefer Not – Lupus Hellinck

2. Aus tiefer Not – J.S. Bach

When you think of Indonesia, the spicy scents of the oriental kitchen probably come to mind. But perhaps also wajang puppets, chirping monkeys swinging through the jungle, or a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Or the traditional dances in beautiful clothing.
