Diepenbrock / Bosmans / Smit
In this concert the ABG Chamber Orchestra will play works by three Amsterdam composers from the first half of the 20th century… and Sweelinck of course. The conductor is Gijs Kramers. The soloist in Poème by Henriëtte Bosmans is Johan van Iersel, deputy solo cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Works by Leo Smit, Henriëtte Bosmans, Alphons Diepenbrock and of course Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. All born and raised Amsterdammers. Except for Sweelinck, who was born in Deventer, but moved to Amsterdam when he was 2, where he grew up and has been buried in the Oude Kerk for more than 400 years. We can rightly call him an Amsterdammer too. And the patriarch of all Amsterdam composers!
We have chosen the Amsterdam of the first half of the 20th century. A period in which a lot happened, politically, artistically, architecturally and intellectually. Three works that were written within a period of 19 years and yet are completely different from each other. Nevertheless, they find their inspiration in the well-known French composers of that time such as Debussy and Ravel.
