In honor of Dag van de Componist (Composer’s Day), Focus Filmtheater will be showing ‘De eeuw van Simeon ten Holt’ (The Century of Simeon ten Holt’). The documentary tells the story of the life of composer Simeon ten Holt, known for the iconic Canto Ostinato. In addition to this masterpiece, the film also highlights his lesser-known compositions, such as the Soloduiveldansen and Incantatie IV, performed by top musicians such as Hannes Minnaar and the Oer Ensemble. The documentary not only shows his music, but also the person behind the compositions. Through stories from his family and loved ones, we discover his motivations, life and sources of inspiration. From his birthplace Bergen to the bunker where he stayed during difficult times, the film presents an intimate portrait of his life. Rich archive material and beautiful images of the nature that inspired him make The Century of Simeon an ode to one of the Netherlands’ greatest composers.
