Een Amsterdamse geschiedenis
As an Amsterdam ensemble, this time we highlight these four special Amsterdam composers. Works by Leo Smit, Henriëtte Bosmans, Alphons Diepenbrock and, of course, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. All born and raised in Amsterdam. Except Sweelinck, who was born in Deventer, but moved to Amsterdam at a young age, where he grew up and has been buried in the Oude Kerk for over 400 years. We can rightly call him an Amsterdammer too. And the patriarch of all Amsterdam composers!
Programme:
1619: The motet Beati Omnes from the Cantiones Sacrae in an arrangement for 11 brass instruments
1917: Overture De Vogels by Alphons Diepenbrock
1923: Poème for cello and orchestra by Henriëtte Bosmans
1936: Symphony in C, by Leo Smit
The ABG Chamber Orchestra has a tradition of giving themed concerts. The various musical works are linked together by means of video or text, placing the music in a particular framework and making the experience even more intense. Like a ‘poetic documentary on stage’. This programme uses video projections and text, voiced by Radio 4 presenter Hans Haffmans.
The concert lasts about 70 minutes and takes place in the Zuiderkerk. A space ideally suited for a programme like this with video projection and lighting, as well as for serving drinks immediately after the concert, where ensemble and audience can reflect for a while.
