Ernst Spyckerelle: chamber opera ‘The hidden page’
Chamber opera about the headstrong and independent Alma Mahler
In this performance, Alma Mahler is no longer ‘the wife of’, but a headstrong, talented and progressive woman. The Intercontinental Ensemble presents the chamber opera The hidden page about her life, with music by Alma and Gustav Mahler, Berg, Zemlinsky, and new compositions by Ernst Spyckerelle. A musical story about emancipation, feminism, loss, and legacy.
As such, the opera is not only about Alma herself, but also about topics that are relevant today. Alma deals with these themes in her own unique way, holding up a mirror to us. The lead role is performed by mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Levental, renowned for her theatrical expressiveness. Soprano Elisabeth Hetherington, winner of the Nederlandse Muziekprijs (Dutch Music Award) in 2024, steps into the role of her daughter Manon Gropius.
