Ernst Spyckerelle: Marsyas

New notes for the recorder.

The sometimes so neglected instrument can evoke the most beautiful timbres and sound effects. Contemporary composers are increasingly discovering the unprecedented possibilities of the recorder. An absolute expert is the Finnish recorder player Juho Myllylä. As part of the Nieuwe Noten project, the three participating festivals – November Music, Gaudeamus and the Grachtenfestival – have invited Myllylä for a richly varied recital.

Young composers were asked to write new works for the extraordinary recorder. Myllylä’s program includes new recorder compositions by A. Crespo Barba, Hildur Elísa Jónsdóttir, Raivis Misjuns and Ernst Spyckerelle. Myllylä uses electronics for some works.

Juho Myllylä studied recorder at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Jorge Isaac, and works with The Royal Wind Music and Ensemble Gamut!, among others. He strives for an open-minded musicianship and does not allow himself to be stopped by boundaries and frameworks. He is also active as a rock musician and guitarist-singer-songwriter with the progressive alternative rock band Burntfield.

In collaboration with Gaudeamus and the Grachtenfestival.
