Georgs Pelecis: Aria from Goldberg Variations
Aria from Goldberg Variations by Georgs Pelecis as encore on the program by Amsterdam Sinfonietta! After the previous successful tour with piano concertos by Bach, the virtuoso piano brothers will, this time, play works by Schubert and their colleague Fazil Say. Amsterdam Sinfonietta combines this with music by Pärt and Mahler.
Especially for Lucas and Arthur Jussen, and also commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Turkish composer and pianist Fazil Say wrote Anka Kuşu (Phoenix), based on the Persian mythological kingbird Simurgh, which shows similarities with the Western mythical animal Phoenix. The virtuoso piano concerto is permeated with oriental rhythms. The concert opens with These Words… by Arvo Pärt. This prayer is intended to restrain people from crime and from giving in to human weaknesses. Amsterdam Sinfonietta closes with the impressive Adagio from Gustav Mahler’s Tenth Symphony, in a new arrangement for string orchestra by Primo Ish-Hurwitz. This last, unfinished work by Mahler is a song of pain and despair about the infidelity of his young wife Alma.
