Gerard Beljon: Droom van Vrede – Somnium al Salaam

You may have been there when it premiered in 2022, Me miseram quid agam /Min al acmaaq; a work by Gerard Beljon, inspired by the 12th century Easter play from the Basilica of Our Lady, for Western and Arabic soprano and choir. During the Heiligdomsvaart year, Studium Chorale will sing a sequel to this special work in which Western music is combined with Oriental sounds. Beljon is once again inspired by events in the world, but this time it is a wish; a Dream of Peace – Somnium al Salaam. On September 6, 2024 you can get a preview of this work, which can be heard in its entirety during the Heiligdomsvaart in June 2025.

Surprising colours, emotional sounds and a profound wish for peace. That is Somnium al Salaam/Dream of Peace. Gerard Beljon composed a musical bridge between east and west, between us and them, between then and now, especially for Studium Chorale.

Let yourself be carried away by powerful harmonies and deeply felt melodies.

When you think of Indonesia, the spicy scents of the oriental kitchen probably come to mind. But perhaps also wajang puppets, chirping monkeys swinging through the jungle, or a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Or the traditional dances in beautiful clothing.
