Giel Vleggaar: The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote (after Richard Strauss)

A hilarious Children’s Concert about the errant knight Don Quixote by musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and actor Gijs Nollen. Fantasy and reality come together in this wonderful musical adventure.

Don Quixote, as many people know, thinks he is a knight and fights giant windmills! Actor Gijs Nollen plays the role of Luis, a boy who is a big fan of Cervantes’ book, Don Quixote de la Mancha. He gets so absorbed in it that he starts to look more and more like the main character. Fantasy and reality come together in this wonderful musical adventure.

In the symphonic poem Don Quixote by Richard Strauss, the cello portrays the main character and the viola portrays his servant. For this occasion, musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra will play a special arrangement for chamber ensemble, written by Giel Vleggaar. The text and production are by Lotte van Dijck. And of course, it’s all based on Cervantes’s legendary novel – still a winner 400 years later!

When you think of Indonesia, the spicy scents of the oriental kitchen probably come to mind. But perhaps also wajang puppets, chirping monkeys swinging through the jungle, or a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Or the traditional dances in beautiful clothing.
